What is the difference between .999 and .9999?

The number refers to the percentage of precious metal in the bar. For example .999 means nine hundred and ninety nine parts of gold in every thousand parts; or 99.9% pure. 9999 means 99.99% pure or nine thousand nine hundred and ninety nine parts per ten thousand. Whilst there is very little difference, the cost of refining the metal to this extra specification will increase the price that you pay for the gold. 18ct Gold is .750, or 75% gold and 25% alloy. 9 ct gold is only .375 or 37.5% gold. Standard silver and sterling silver are both .925 (92.5%) silver, where as fine silver is 99.9% silver or .999.
